The Elsdon Register of baptisms, marriages and burials was transcribed by the Rev. Thomas Stephens, vicar of Holy Trinity in Horsley near Rochester and includes a wonderful preface written by him with lots of historical facts about Redesdale. It was published in 1903 by the Society of Antiquaries Newcastle Upon Tyne. The register covers the parish of Elsdon from 1672 to 1812. Below are some of the early burials in Byrness extracted from the book. Note that from the six entries below each one has a different spelling of "Byrness":
