John Chisholm was born in 1687 and was ordained as the Minister for Birdhope Craig in 1722. There was no manse for ministers at Birdhope Craig in his time as Minister. Reverend Thomas Newlands believes he may have lived for some time at a house in Stobbs near Horsley called "The Ministers house". He retired from his position as minister in his later years and lived out his last years with his son George at Clennel near Harbottle. He passed away in 1768 and is interred in the Marshall enclosure in Byrness with his family. His son George died in 1795 aged 60 at Clennel and he too is in the enclosure at Byrness.
